STAC NOTE STAC NOTE
WINDOWS SYSTEM.INI
(Applies to ReachOut versions 3.X, 4.X, 5.X)
STAC FAX 8604 (9/95)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
BACKGROUND
Many remote control software packages make entries in the Windows
SYSTEM.INI file. These entries conflict with ReachOut by "taking
over" Window's handling of certain events and interrupts. Windows
itself place entries in the file through the Control Panel Ports
Section, and the 386 Enhanced Section. This document covers some
of the other remote control packages and how they affect the
SYSTEM.INI file of Windows. All of these entries conflict with
ReachOut.
Changing any of the following entries should be done with
caution. You cannot always determine your original driver. Make a
backup copy of the file before beginning . Listed below are
WindowsÆ original entries in the SYSTEM.INI's [boot] section.
keyboard.drv=keyboard.drv
display.drv=vga.drv
mouse.drv=mouse.drv (or lmouse.drv for Logitech)
SOLUTION
- Determine the changes that your version of ReachOut makes to
the SYSTEM.INI.
- Remove the SYSTEM.INI settings made by other remote control
software.
Determine the changes that your version of ReachOut makes to the
SYSTEM.INI
1. ReachOut version 3.x makes the following changes to the
SYSTEM.INI file:
[boot]
display.drv=c:\reachout\rchout.drv
rodisplay.drv=vga.drv
keyboard.drv=c:\reachout\rchkyb.drv
rokeyboard.drv=keyboard.drv
mouse.drv=c:\reachout\rchmse.drv
romouse.drv=rchmouse.drv
[386Enh]
device=c:\reachout\vrchout.386
device=c:\reachout\vrchsrl.386
These lines can be added with the INSRO command and taken
out with the REMRO command.
2. ReachOut version 4.x makes no changes to the SYSTEM.INI
file.
3. ReachOut 5.0 does not change the [boot] section but adds the
following lines to [386Enh]:
device=c:\reachout\vrchsys.386
device=c:\reachout\vrchdos.386
device=c:\reachout\raclient.386 (for Remote Access/drive mapping)
device=c:\reachout\vrchsrl.386 (if using serial
communications)
Remove the SYSTEM.INI settings made by other remote control
software
1. Remove all lines in the SYSTEM.INIÆs [386enh] section that
read:
CommXautoassign=Y
Where X is a commport #, and Y is -1, 0, or 2
2. Remove any unnecessary ComXbase= and ComXirq= statements,
where X is a commport #. Unnecessary statements that are
within the industry standards: Com1=3F8 IRQ=4 Com2=2F8
IRQ=3 Com3=3E8 IRQ=4 Com4=2E9 IRQ=3
3. Reset your SYSTEM.INI to original by uninstalling the
offending product.
NOTE: Any of the following examples that reference a change in
the SYSTEM.INIÆs [boot] section "keyboard= line", also affects
ReachOutÆs installation. You must edit ReachOutÆs Batch files, if
appropriate, and the REACHOUT.INI. Remove all references to kbd=,
and delete the RCHKYB.ORG file in the REACHOUT directory.
